Sashiko is a traditional Japanese embroidery technique that originated during the Edo period (1615–1868) in the rural region of Tohoku, where cotton could not be grown and fabric was highly valued. It was mainly used to reinforce and mend garments, arising out of a functional and decorative need to extend the life of clothing.

The word sashiko literally means “little stabs” or “small stitches” and refers to the repeated running stitches used to create geometric or botanical patterns that represent Japan’s history and traditions. Today, sashiko has become a decorative embroidery technique recognised worldwide.
